What is DPI
The DPI stands for “Dots Per Inch.” The DPI is used to calculate the resolution of the image both on screen and in print. As the name suggests, the DPI tests how many dots fit in a linear inch. As a consequence, the higher the DPI, the more detail can be seen in the picture.
It should be remembered that the DPI is not a square inch dot. Since a 600 dpi printer can print 600 dots horizontally and vertically per inch, it literally prints 360,000 (600 x 600) dots per square inch.
Also, as most displays have a native resolution of 72 or 96 pixels per inch, the actual size of the 300 dpi image cannot be viewed. Instead, when displayed at 100%, the image would appear much larger than the print version, since the pixels on the screen take up more space than the dots on the page.
